Why Plain Text Notes Last: The Case for .txt Files

Note apps come and go, but a plain text file written in 1995 still opens today. If you care about your notes outliving any single product, plain text is the safest format you can choose.

What plain text actually is

A plain text file contains characters and nothing else: no fonts, colors or embedded objects. The modern standard encoding, UTF-8, can represent virtually every writing system, so Korean, Japanese, Arabic and emoji are all fine. AllInNote writes UTF-8 files with the .txt extension.

Five reasons it lasts

  1. Universal. Every operating system, phone and editor can open a text file. You are never locked into one application.
  2. Small. A note is typically a few kilobytes, so thousands of notes take almost no space and sync instantly.
  3. Searchable. Your operating system, your cloud drive and command-line tools can search the content of text files directly.
  4. Durable. There is no proprietary container that can become unreadable or corrupted by a version change.
  5. Private. A text file is just a file you own. It does not need an account, a server or a subscription.

What you give up, and how to cope

Plain text cannot store bold, italics or font sizes inside the file. In AllInNote you can still format text on screen for readability, and the formatting is remembered in your browser, but the saved .txt file contains the text only. If something truly needs rich formatting, such as a printed report, finish it in a word processor and keep the raw notes as text. Many people use light conventions inside text instead, such as ALL CAPS for headings, dashes for lists and blank lines between sections. These survive in any editor.

Good habits for text notes

Plain text and your tools

Because the files are ordinary files, you can open them with any editor, search them with your operating system, compare versions with diff tools, and keep a history with version control software. AllInNote simply gives you a convenient way to view and edit many of them at once.
