User Guide
Everything you need to get productive with AllInNote in a few minutes.
Getting started
- Click Select folder in the top bar and choose the folder where your notes should live.
- Click New note to add a note, or use Grid to create many at once.
- Type. That is it — your text is saved for you.
Automatic saving
Meeting.txt. Saving happens about half a second after you stop typing, and the status bar at the bottom shows when it is done.
- Default names. New notes are called
Noname1,Noname2and so on. Blank, untouched notes are not written to disk until you type something or rename them. - Renaming. Click the name at the top of a note and type a new one. The file in your folder is renamed to match, even if the note was loaded from an existing
.txtfile. If a file with that name already exists, a number is added, such asMeeting (2).txt. - Unsaved indicator. A small red dot before a note's name means it has not been written to a file yet. With a folder selected the dot disappears within a moment. Without a folder it stays until you save.
- No folder selected? Your notes are still kept in your browser, but only inside that browser. Use Select folder, or Save (which asks you to choose a folder), to create real files.
- Folder permission. Browsers ask permission before a website can write to a folder. If the browser forgets the permission after a restart, the folder button shows Reconnect; click it once to continue auto-saving.
Creating and arranging notes
- New note adds one note. The workspace starts empty.
- Grid opens a 10 × 10 board. Press and drag across it to choose columns and rows; releasing creates that many notes (for example 5 columns × 2 rows creates 10). All notes have the same size. If the last row is not full, the space stays empty.
- Limit: up to 100 notes, at most 10 per row and 10 rows.
- Reorder by dragging a note's handle (the dotted grip at the left of its header). The other notes slide out of the way.
- Resize: move the mouse over the border between two notes; the pointer turns into a double arrow. Drag a vertical border to make one note wider and its neighbor narrower, or drag a horizontal border to change the height of the rows above and below. Notes never overlap. Double-click a border to make sizes equal again. Sizes reset when the number of rows or columns changes.
- Color: click the round color button on a note to choose one of ten pastel colors, or the crossed circle to return to the default.
- Enlarge: the square button (or double-clicking the header) enlarges a note to about 80% of the workspace. Click the restore button, click outside the note, or press Esc to shrink it back.
- Duplicate: the copy button creates a new note with the same content right after the original.
- Move between notes: press Tab for the next note and Shift + Tab for the previous one.
- Select: click a note to select it. Hold Ctrl (or ⌘ on Mac) and click to select several. Click empty space around the notes to clear the selection.
Opening, saving and closing
- Open lets you pick one or more
.txtfiles. Files inside your selected folder keep saving to the same file; files from elsewhere are imported as new notes and saved into your folder. - Save saves the selected note(s). Save all saves every note.
- Close closes the selected note(s); Close all closes everything. Closing never deletes the file from your folder.
- If a note has not been saved, AllInNote asks whether to save it before closing. Notes that are already saved close immediately.
Find and replace
- Type in Find in notes: every note containing that text gets a red outline and the toolbar shows how many matched. Press Enter or the magnifier to jump to the next match.
- In the replace area, enter the word or sentence to replace, then the new text. Replace changes it in the selected note only; Replace all changes it in every note that contains it. Pinned notes are skipped.
Formatting, links and pinning
- Select part of the text and use the toolbar to change font, size, bold and italic for that part only. With no text selected, the change applies to the whole note (or to every selected note). Details:
- The font list can show every font installed on your computer after you allow it once.
- HTML code in a note is color-coded automatically.
- Links: addresses beginning with
http://,https://orwww.are underlined. Click one to open it in a new tab. To edit the address text itself, hold Ctrl while clicking. - Pin: the pin button locks a note's text and name so it cannot be changed by accident or by Replace all.
Printing
Open the Print menu and choose Print selected notes or Print all notes. Each note starts on a new page with its file name as a heading.
Supported browsers
For automatic saving to a folder, use a desktop Chromium-based browser such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, which support the File System Access API. In other browsers (Firefox, Safari) the editor still works and keeps notes inside the browser; use Open to load text files and Save to download notes as .txt files. Mobile browsers are not a primary target.
FAQ
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Notes are processed in your browser and saved to your browser storage and to the folder you choose. We do not receive your text.
Where are my files?
In the folder you selected, as ordinary .txt files you can open with any editor, sync with a cloud-drive folder, or back up as you like.
I cleared my browser data and my notes disappeared.
Notes that were only kept in the browser can be removed when you clear site data. Notes saved to a folder are safe because they are real files. Choose a folder to protect your work.
Why does my browser ask for permission?
Writing to a folder and listing installed fonts are protected features. The browser asks you first and you can decline; the editor continues to work with fewer features.
Can I use more than 100 notes?
The workspace is limited to 100 open notes to keep every note readable. Close notes you are done with; their files remain in your folder and can be opened again.
