Frequently Asked Questions
Short answers to the questions we hear most. For step-by-step instructions, see the User Guide.
Basics
What is AllInNote?
A free note editor that runs in your web browser. It shows up to 100 plain-text notes at once in a grid and can save each note as a .txt file in a folder you choose.
Is AllInNote free? Do I need an account?
It is free and there is no sign-up or login. The site may show advertising to cover its costs.
How is it different from Notepad?
Notepad shows one file per tab or window. AllInNote puts many notes on one screen, saves them automatically to a folder and lets you search and replace across all of them. It does not replace a full code editor; see this comparison.
Saving and files
Does it save my notes automatically?
Yes. After you choose a folder, whatever you type is saved to that folder as note name.txt about half a second after you stop typing. Learn more in How to save notes as .txt files automatically.
Where are my notes stored?
In your folder as ordinary text files, and also in your browser so that the board is restored when you come back. Nothing is uploaded to our servers.
Can I open an existing .txt file?
Yes. Use Open to pick one or more files, or choose your folder and load the files it already contains. Edits are saved back to the same file.
Can I open multiple text files at once?
Yes, you can open many at once and see them side by side in the grid. See How to view multiple text files side by side.
What encoding does it use?
UTF-8, so Korean, Japanese, Chinese, accented letters and emoji are saved correctly.
What happens if I rename a note?
The file in your folder is renamed to match, even if the note was loaded from an existing file.
Does closing a note delete the file?
No. Closing only removes the note from the screen. The file stays in your folder.
Features
How many notes can I have?
Up to 100 open notes, at most 10 per row and 10 rows. The Grid menu lets you drag over a 10 × 10 board to choose a layout.
Can I search across all notes?
Yes. Type in Find in notes and every note containing the text gets a red outline. You can replace text in the selected note or in all notes. See How to find and replace text in multiple .txt files.
Can I format text, change the font or use dark mode?
Yes. Select text and choose font, size, bold or italic for that part only, or format a whole note. Light and dark modes are available. Formatting is shown in the app and is not stored inside the .txt file.
Can I print my notes?
Yes. Use the Print menu to print the selected notes or all notes.
Can I lock a note so it cannot be edited?
Yes. Pin it. A pinned note cannot be edited or renamed and is skipped by Replace all.
Are links clickable?
Yes. Click a web address to open it in a new tab. Hold Ctrl while clicking to edit the address text.
Browsers, devices and privacy
Which browsers work?
Automatic saving to a folder needs a desktop Chromium-based browser such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. In Firefox and Safari the editor works and keeps notes in the browser; you can open and save .txt files manually.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
The page adapts to small screens, but folder saving is not available on most mobile browsers and the editor is designed for desktop use.
Does it work offline?
The page needs a connection to load. Once it is open, editing keeps working if the connection drops, but reloading the page requires being online again.
Is my text private?
Your notes are not sent to our servers. See the Privacy Policy for what the site does collect, such as server logs, anonymous analytics and advertising cookies.
I cleared my browser data and lost a note.
Notes that were only in browser storage can be removed when site data is cleared. Notes saved to your folder are safe because they are real files. Choose a folder to protect your work.
